Exit Interview FAQ
What is an exit interview?
An exit interview is a loan counseling session that provides loan repayment, grace period, billing options information, and collects updated borrower information as required by the federal government. Prior to graduating, leaving the university, or dropping below half-time, federal loan borrowers are required to complete a mandatory exit counseling session. These online exit-counseling sessions provides a borrower their rights and responsibilities as a Federal Loan recipient.
Why are exit interviews mandatory?
It is a federal law and a condition of receiving a federally funded student loan.
If I am planning to attend graduate school at Rutgers, am I still required to complete an exit interview?
Yes, you must complete the exit interview requirement.
If I withdraw or stop attending school, am I required to complete an exit interview?
Yes, you must participate in an exit interview if you borrowed federal student loans during your attendance at the University.
Do I have to complete more than one on-line exit interview?
Yes, you are required to complete an exit interview for each of the federal loans you received. If you received both a Federal Direct Loan and a Federal Perkins Student Loan, you will be required to complete at least two on-line exits interview.
What happens if I do not complete the exit interview requirement?
If you do not complete the requirement, a hold will be placed on your records. The hold will only be removed upon completion of an exit interview process, which includes your signature and return of the completed borrower information form.
What is a grace period?
A grace period is the time-frame after you graduate, leave school or drop below half-time enrollment during which payments are not required. The repayment period begins the day after your grace period ends.
Who is UAS?
University Accounting Services (UAS) is Rutgers University’s billing servicer. UAS will bill and process payments for the Federal Perkins Loan program and provide customer service for your Perkins Loan.
How do I complete the exit interview requirement?
Verify loan information by logging onto www.NSLDS.ed.gov.
Prior to accessing one of the (2) Exit Interview websites below, please have the following information ready:
- Social security number
- Date of birth
- Driver license number
- Permanent email address
- Names, addresses, telephone numbers of (3) references.
